LOS ANGELES, CA — Yesterday, Assemblymember Mark González was joined by Mayor Karen Bass and Senator Maria Elena Durazo at his first annual Turkey Giveaway, located in Mariachi Plaza, where he distributed over 1,000 turkeys to families in need this holiday season.
"Thanksgiving is a time to stand with our communities," said Assemblymember Mark González (D-Los Angeles). "From continued economic strain, on going food insecurity, the traumatic impact of ICE raids, and the housing crisis that weighs on families every day, my Assembly District has carried more than its share of hardship. Providing these turkeys is about more than a holiday meal; it's about restoring dignity, offering stability, and reminding our neighbors that we see them, we hear them, and we are fighting for them every single day."

In Partnership with Sysco and the Weingart East LA YMCA, these turkeys went to families in need; no questions asked.
1,000 turkeys, canned goods, holiday pies, and fresh produce were made available to over 31 non-profits, community centers, and clinics—ensuring that our most vulnerable neighbors, regardless of immigration or socio-economic status, could host their family Thanksgiving dinner.
"Our Thanksgiving event matters because it meets a real need in East LA/Boyle Heights," said Brenda Hernandez, executive director of Weingart East LA YMCA. Families are still facing food insecurity, and these moments of support remind our community that they are seen, valued, and not alone. It's important to me that the YMCA continues to be a place people can count on, especially during the holidays. It's about showing up with dignity, care, and consistency, reminding our community that the WELA YMCA is here to support them beyond programs, but as a true partner."

Assemblymember Mark González is the Assembly Majority Whip. He serves on the Committees on Appropriations, Health, Public Safety, Rules, and Utilities & Energy. He represents the 54th District, composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Commerce, Montebello, and Vernon.
